The Giants of Broadcasting*

In 2003, the Library of American Broadcasting Foundation began a program of recognizing and honoring the Giants of the profession whose history it holds fast, insuring that their names and accomplishments would not be left to legend but would rather be kept before the world for al to see and marvel.  Fifty-six individuals (pairs were counted as one) were chosen for that initial venture, to be memorialized in The First Fifty Giants of Broadcasting: Out of Thin Air.

The first edition embraced those men and women who started it all:  from Guglielmo Marconi through David Sarnoff and William S. Paley, H.V. Kaltenborn and Edward R. Murrow, Pauline Frederick and Lucille Ball.  Pioneers without parallel.

In 2004, another 17 joined them in
The Giants of Broadcasting, Volume II.  In the second edition the LABF expands its focus to take in pioneers of a more recent vintage, who make more modern marks.  Theirs, too, is a roll of honor, and their story, too, contributes to the remarkable journey of the American airwaves.

This is a series without end.  The Library of American Broadcasting Foundation will continue “Keeping the Past for the Future,” while its curators and scholars assure that the history of broadcasting does not, like the medium itself, disappear into thin air.

On September 15, 2005, we will celebrate yet another group of Giants, past and present, who continue to grace our industry and our lives.  We will convey our admiration and gratitude on this occasion, which us designed to keep their example _ and that of their fellow pioneers _forever before us.
